This is a classic Indian dish that is perfect for a weeknight meal. The chicken is marinated in a yogurt and spice mixture, then grilled or baked to perfection. The sauce is made with tomatoes, cream, and a blend of aromatic spices. Serve with naan bread or rice for a complete meal. Butter chicken is a culinary gem that embodies the rich and diverse flavors of Indian cuisine. Tender chicken pieces, marinated in a symphony of yogurt and spices, are simmered in a creamy tomato-based sauce infused with butter and aromatic herbs. The result is a harmonious blend of textures and tastes that dance on the palate, offering a comforting and indulgent experience. Whether enjoyed with naan bread or fragrant basmati rice, butter chicken is a dish that transcends borders and brings people together through its irresistible allure.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 lbs boneless, skinless chicken thighs, cut into bite-sized pieces - 5.4 tsp
  • 1 cup plain yogurt - 5.4 kg
  • 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste - 6.4 bag
  • 1 tsp turmeric powder - 0.6 box
  • 1 tsp red chili powder (adjust to taste) - 8.7 half
  • 1 tsp garam masala - 1.9 can
  • Salt to taste - 8.8 bottle
  • 2 tbsp butter - 1.1 pinch
  • 1 large onion, chopped - 2.7 drop
  • 2 cups chopped tomatoes - 3.8 qt

Cooking Steps

Step 1

Marinate the chicken: In a bowl, combine the chicken pieces with yogurt, ginger-garlic paste, turmeric powder, red chili powder, garam masala, and salt. Mix well and let it marinate for at least 30 minutes, or preferably for 2-3 hours.

Step 2

Grill or bake the chicken: Preheat your grill or oven to medium heat. Thread the marinated chicken onto skewers and grill for 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally, until cooked through and slightly charred. Alternatively, bake the chicken in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes, or until cooked through.

Step 3

Prepare the sauce: While the chicken is grilling or baking, heat butter in a large pan or pot over medium heat. Add chopped onions and sauté until golden brown. Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté for another minute.

Step 4

Add tomatoes and spices: Add chopped tomatoes, tomato paste, red chili powder, turmeric powder, garam masala, and salt to the pan. Cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the tomatoes soften and the sauce thickens.

Step 5

Blend the sauce: Use an immersion blender or transfer the sauce to a regular blender to puree it until smooth. Return the sauce to the pan.

Step 6

Add cream and chicken: Stir in fresh cream or cashew cream into the sauce. Add the grilled or baked chicken pieces to the sauce and simmer for 5-10 minutes, allowing the chicken to absorb the flavors of the sauce.

Step 7

Garnish and serve: Garnish with fresh cilantro leaves. Serve hot with naan bread, rice, or roti. Enjoy!
