Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
In a large pot, cook the ziti pasta according to package directions until al dente. Drain well and set aside.
In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat. Drain off any excess grease. Add the chopped onion and garlic, and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, sugar, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
In a medium bowl, combine the ricotta cheese, egg, Parmesan cheese, and fresh parsley. Mix well.
In the prepared baking dish, spread a thin layer of the meat sauce. Add half of the cooked ziti, then top with half of the ricotta mixture. Spread evenly. Spoon half of the remaining meat sauce over the ricotta, and sprinkle with half of the mozzarella cheese.
Repeat layers with the remaining ziti, ricotta mixture, meat sauce, and mozzarella cheese. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until bubbly and the cheese is melted and lightly golden brown.
Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh basil, if desired.
