This classic Bolognese sauce is a rich and hearty meat sauce, perfect for tossing with pasta. It features a blend of ground beef and pork, simmered in a tomato and wine-infused broth with aromatic vegetables and herbs. The slow cooking process allows the flavors to meld together, creating a deeply satisfying and flavorful sauce. Serve over your favorite pasta, such as spaghetti, tagliatelle, or pappardelle, for a comforting and delicious meal. Garnish with freshly grated Parmesan cheese for the perfect finishing touch. You can adjust the amount of red pepper flakes to your liking, depending on how spicy you want the sauce to be. This recipe is easily doubled or tripled for larger gatherings or to freeze for future meals. Don't be afraid to experiment with different herbs and spices to create your own unique version of this Italian classic. A touch of nutmeg or cinnamon can add a subtle warmth and complexity to the sauce. Enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil - 4.9 lb
  • 1 pound ground beef - 4.0 fl oz
  • 1/2 pound ground pork - 5.1 fl oz
  • 1 onion, chopped - 2.7 package
  • 1 carrot, chopped - 5.8 ml
  • 1 celery stalk, chopped - 10.5 drop
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced - 6.7 to taste
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste - 5.5 cm
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano - 3.2 gal
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil - 9.9 box

Cooking Steps

Step 1

In a large pot or Dutch oven, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add ground beef and pork and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned.

Step 2

Add chopped onion, carrot, and celery to the pot and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.

Step 3

Stir in minced garlic, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and black pepper. Cook for 1 minute, until fragrant.

Step 4

Pour in red wine and cook, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot, until the wine has mostly evaporated, about 5 minutes.

Step 5

Add crushed tomatoes and beef broth to the pot. Bring to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for at least 1 hour, or up to 3 hours, stirring occasionally.

Step 6

Stir in heavy cream (if using) during the last 15 minutes of cooking. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed.

Step 7

Serve Bolognese sauce over your favorite cooked pasta. Garnish with freshly grated Parmesan cheese and fresh parsley, if desired.
