Baklava is a sweet and nutty dessert that originated in the Middle East and is now enjoyed all over the world. Layers of flaky phyllo dough are filled with a mixture of finely chopped walnuts, cinnamon, cloves, and sugar, then drizzled with a sweet honey syrup. This easy-to-follow recipe yields a deliciously decadent baklava that's perfect for sharing with family and friends.

Ingredients

  • unsalted butter, melted - 1.0 cup
  • phyllo dough - 1.0 lb
  • finely chopped walnuts - 2.0 cup
  • granulated sugar - 0.5 cup
  • ground cinnamon - 1.0 tsp
  • ground cloves - 0.5 tsp
  • honey - 0.5 cup
  • water - 0.5 cup
  • lemon juice - 1.0 tbsp

Cooking Steps

Step 1

Preheat your oven to 3500F (1750C).

Step 2

Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with some of the melted butter.

Step 3

In a large mixing bowl, combine the chopped walnuts, sugar, cinnamon, and cloves.

Step 4

Carefully lay one sheet of phyllo dough in the greased baking dish, and brush it with melted butter.

Step 5

Repeat the process with 7 more sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each one with melted butter.

Step 6

Sprinkle a generous amount of the walnut mixture evenly over the eighth layer of phyllo dough.

Step 7

Lay another sheet of phyllo dough over the walnut mixture, and brush it with melted butter.

Step 8

Repeat the process with 7 more sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each one with melted butter.

Step 9

Continue layering the walnut mixture and phyllo dough, using 8 sheets of phyllo dough for each layer, until you run out of ingredients.

Step 10

Cut the baklava into 12 equal pieces, and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes, or until golden brown.

Step 11

While the baklava is baking, prepare the syrup by combining the honey, water, and lemon juice in a saucepan. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 10-15 minutes, until it thickens.

Step 12

When the baklava is finished baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over it, making sure to cover every piece.

Step 13

Let the baklava cool to room temperature before serving.
