This Spicy Thai Basil Chicken recipe, also known as Pad Kra Pao Gai, is a quick and easy dish bursting with bold flavors. Ground chicken is stir-fried with fresh basil, chili peppers, garlic, and a savory-sweet sauce. The dish is traditionally served over rice with a fried egg on top, adding richness and a delightful contrast to the spiciness. It is a very popular street food in Thailand, and it can easily be made at home, customize the spice level according to your preferences, and enjoy the explosion of authentic Thai flavors in every bite. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground chicken - 4.5 tsp
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced - 3.8 as needed
  • 2-3 Thai chili peppers, minced (adjust to taste) - 3.8 jar
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce - 5.3 fl oz
  • 2 tablespoons oyster sauce - 2.7 ml
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce - 2.1 g
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar - 7.0 can
  • 2 tablespoons water - 10.3 dash
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil - 1.6 tsp
  • 1 cup fresh Thai basil leaves - 5.0 cm

Cooking Steps

Step 1

In a bowl, mix together soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, brown sugar, and water. Set aside.

Step 2

Mince garlic and chili peppers. If you prefer less spice, remove the seeds from the chili peppers.

Step 3

Heat vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the minced garlic and chili peppers and stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 4

Add the ground chicken to the wok and break it apart with a spatula. Stir-fry until the chicken is cooked through and no longer pink.

Step 5

Pour the sauce mixture over the chicken and stir well to combine. Bring to a simmer and cook for a few minutes until the sauce has slightly thickened.

Step 6

Add the fresh basil leaves to the wok and stir until they wilt, about 15-20 seconds.

Step 7

Serve the Spicy Thai Basil Chicken hot over rice. Top with a fried egg, if desired. Garnish with extra basil leaves and sliced chili peppers. Enjoy!
