This Spicy Thai Basil Chicken, also known as Pad Kra Pao Gai, is a fiery and flavorful stir-fry that’s quick to make and packed with authentic Thai flavors. It features ground chicken, fresh basil, chili peppers, garlic, and a savory-sweet sauce. It’s typically served over rice with a fried egg on top. The heat from the chilies, the aroma of basil, and the umami from the sauce combine to create a dish that is both comforting and exciting. Adjust the amount of chili to your preferred spice level, and enjoy this taste of Thailand in your own kitchen. This recipe is perfect for a weeknight meal when you crave something bold and delicious, bringing the vibrant taste of Thai street food right to your table. Garnish with extra basil leaves and a drizzle of sesame oil for an extra touch of flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground chicken - 10.0 half
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced - 5.2 drop
  • 2-4 Thai chilies, chopped (adjust to taste) - 8.9 l
  • 1 cup fresh Thai basil leaves - 4.8 tbsp
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil - 6.7 pt
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce - 9.8 l
  • 1 tablespoon oyster sauce - 3.0 cm
  • 1 tablespoon fish sauce - 0.8 tsp
  • 1 teaspoon dark soy sauce - 1.3 dash
  • 1 teaspoon sugar - 8.1 pt

Cooking Steps

Step 1

In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, oyster sauce, fish sauce, dark soy sauce, sugar, and lime juice. Set aside.

Step 2

Heat vegetable oil in a wok or large skillet over medium-high heat. Add minced garlic and chopped chilies. Stir-fry for about 30 seconds until fragrant.

Step 3

Add ground chicken to the wok. Break it up with a spatula and stir-fry until it's no longer pink.

Step 4

Pour the sauce mixture over the chicken. Stir-fry until the chicken is well coated and the sauce has thickened slightly.

Step 5

Add fresh Thai basil leaves to the wok. Stir-fry until the basil is wilted and fragrant, about 30 seconds.

Step 6

Serve the Spicy Thai Basil Chicken immediately over steamed rice. Top with a fried egg, if desired.

Step 7

Garnish with extra basil leaves and a drizzle of sesame oil (optional) before serving.

Easy to make and full of flavor! I was a little hesitant about the amount of chili, but it turned out to be perfect. I served it with jasmine rice and a side of cucumber salad. Delicious!

I found this recipe to be bland. I added a lot more chili, garlic, and fish sauce, and even then, it still needed something. Maybe I did something wrong.

It was good, but not amazing. I found the sauce a little too sweet. I'll try adjusting the sugar next time. The basil was fresh and fragrant, which was definitely a plus.

This was a quick and easy weeknight meal. The flavors were spot on! I followed the recipe exactly and the chicken was cooked perfectly. The only thing I would change is using a bit less chili next time. It was a little too spicy for my kids.

It was a decent recipe. The cooking time was accurate. However, I felt like the chicken could have been more flavorful. Maybe marinating it beforehand would help.
