Whole steamed fish is a traditional Chinese New Year dish that is easy to make and full of symbolic meaning. The fish is infused with ginger and scallions to create a delicious and aromatic dish that symbolizes prosperity and abundance.

Ingredients

  • fish - 1.0 whole
  • scallions - 3.0 pcs
  • ginger - 3.0 pcs
  • soy sauce - 2.0 tbsp
  • Shaoxing wine - 2.0 tbsp
  • vegetable oil - 1.0 tbsp
  • sugar - 1.0 tsp
  • Salt and pepper - 1.0 to taste
  • Cilantro - 1.0 as needed

Cooking Steps

Step 1

Place the fish on a heatproof plate that fits inside your steamer. Score the fish on both sides with a few diagonal cuts.

Step 2

Scatter the scallions and ginger over the fish.

Step 3

In a small bowl, mix together the soy sauce, Shaoxing wine, vegetable oil, sugar, salt, and pepper. Pour the mixture over the fish.

Step 4

Carefully place the plate with the fish in the steamer basket, cover, and steam for 15-20 minutes or until the fish is cooked through and the flesh is opaque.

Step 5

Garnish with cilantro and serve the fish hot, with steamed rice and vegetables.
