This classic Bolognese sauce is a rich and flavorful meat sauce perfect for pasta. It's made with a combination of ground beef and pork, simmered in a tomato-based sauce with vegetables and herbs. The slow cooking process allows the flavors to meld together, creating a deeply satisfying sauce. Serve it over your favorite pasta for a comforting and delicious meal. The key to a great Bolognese is patience – letting it simmer for a long time develops the best flavor. Feel free to adjust the vegetables and herbs to your liking. Some people add mushrooms or a pinch of red pepper flakes for extra depth.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef - 0.9 lb
  • 1/2 pound ground pork - 5.8 half
  • 1 medium onion, chopped - 6.2 jar
  • 1 carrot, chopped - 4.6 tsp
  • 1 celery stalk, chopped - 0.8 cm
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced - 3.1 oz
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste - 8.5 l
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano - 0.6 jar
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes - 4.6 package
  • 1 cup beef broth - 0.9 gal

Cooking Steps

Step 1

In a large pot or Dutch oven, brown the ground beef and pork over medium-high heat. Drain off any excess fat.

Step 2

Add the chopped onion, carrot, and celery to the pot. Cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.

Step 3

Stir in the garlic, tomato paste, and dried oregano. Cook for 1 minute, until fragrant.

Step 4

Pour in the crushed tomatoes and beef broth. Bring to a simmer.

Step 5

Reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer for at least 1 hour, or up to 3 hours, stirring occasionally. The longer it simmers, the richer the flavor will be.

Step 6

Stir in the milk or cream (if using) during the last 15 minutes of cooking. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Step 7

Serve the Bolognese sauce over your favorite cooked pasta. Garnish with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil, if desired.

Absolutely delicious and easy to make. Follow the recipe and don't cut the simmering time short! Amazing flavor, will become a regular dish in our home.

Great recipe, but I think the simmering time could be adjusted based on your preference. I simmered it for a little longer and it became even better.

Absolutely fantastic! The flavor is incredible. I made it for a dinner party, and everyone loved it. I simmered it for about 3 hours to get the best results.

Not a fan. The sauce was too acidic for me, and I felt like it needed more seasoning. I followed the recipe, but the flavor was just off. Maybe it's my taste buds.

This is a solid Bolognese recipe. The flavors are great, and it's relatively easy to make. I added some carrots to the vegetables, and it worked well.
