This classic lasagna recipe features layers of pasta, a rich meat sauce, creamy béchamel, and plenty of cheese. It's a labor of love, but the results are well worth the effort. Perfect for a family dinner or special occasion, this lasagna is sure to be a crowd-pleaser. The key to a great lasagna is to build flavor in each layer, starting with a well-seasoned meat sauce and a smooth, creamy béchamel. Don't skimp on the cheese, and be sure to let the lasagna rest for at least 15 minutes after baking to allow it to set up properly. This will make it easier to slice and serve. Feel free to adjust the amount of each ingredient to suit your taste. For example, you can add more vegetables to the meat sauce or use a different type of cheese.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef - 5.3 inch
  • 1 onion, chopped - 5.1 inch
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced - 2.8 jar
  • 1 carrot, chopped - 2.6 tsp
  • 1 celery stalk, chopped - 8.5 gal
  • 1 (28 ounce) can crushed tomatoes - 4.2 fl oz
  • 1 (15 ounce) can tomato sauce - 3.1 box
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste - 9.1 bag
  • 2 teaspoons dried oregano - 6.3 as needed
  • 2 teaspoons dried basil - 6.5 drop

Cooking Steps

Step 1

Prepare the meat sauce: In a large pot, brown the ground beef over medium-high heat. Drain off any excess fat. Add the chopped onion, garlic, carrots, and celery and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in the tomato paste, crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, oregano, basil, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for at least 30 minutes, or up to 2 hours, stirring occasionally.

Step 2

Make the béchamel sauce: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, until a smooth paste forms (a roux). Gradually whisk in the milk, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Bring to a simmer and cook until the sauce has thickened, about 5-7 minutes. Stir in the nutmeg, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat and set aside.

Step 3

Cook the lasagna noodles according to package directions. Drain and set aside.

Step 4

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.

Step 5

Assemble the lasagna: Spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom of the baking dish. Top with a layer of lasagna noodles, overlapping as needed. Spread half of the ricotta cheese over the noodles, followed by a layer of meat sauce, a drizzle of béchamel sauce, and a sprinkle of mozzarella and Parmesan cheese. Repeat layers, ending with a final layer of noodles, meat sauce, béchamel sauce, and a generous amount of mozzarella and Parmesan cheese.

Step 6

Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the lasagna is bubbly and the cheese is golden brown. Let stand for 15 minutes before slicing and serving.
