In a large skillet, brown the ground beef and Italian sausage over medium-high heat. Drain any excess grease.
Add the chopped onion, garlic, and bell pepper to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and sugar. Bring to a simmer and cook for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
While the sauce simmers, prepare the béchamel sauce. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to create a roux.
Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish.
Layer lasagna noodles, meat sauce, béchamel sauce, mozzarella cheese, and Parmesan cheese. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used, ending with a layer of cheese.
Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Let the lasagna rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving.
It was good, but not amazing. The meat sauce was a little too acidic for my taste. Maybe a touch of sugar would help balance it out.
Really enjoyed this lasagna. The instructions were easy to follow, and the result was fantastic. I added a little more herbs to the sauce.
This lasagna is outstanding! The flavors are amazing, and the texture is perfect. This recipe is a keeper!
Very good recipe. The lasagna had a wonderful flavor. I added a bit more garlic to the meat sauce.
The lasagna was okay, but the béchamel sauce was a bit bland. I might add nutmeg next time to give it more flavor.
