In a large skillet, brown the ground beef and Italian sausage over medium-high heat. Drain any excess grease.
Add the chopped onion, garlic, and bell pepper to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and sugar. Bring to a simmer and cook for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
While the sauce simmers, prepare the béchamel sauce. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to create a roux.
Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish.
Layer lasagna noodles, meat sauce, béchamel sauce, mozzarella cheese, and Parmesan cheese. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used, ending with a layer of cheese.
Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Let the lasagna rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving.
I struggled with the béchamel, it came out lumpy. The meat sauce was also a bit bland. Needs more seasoning.
This recipe is a keeper! The béchamel sauce was so creamy and delicious. The lasagna was a huge hit at my dinner party.
Great recipe! My family loved it. I used a different type of mozzarella, and it worked out perfectly.
Best lasagna I've ever made! The layers were perfect, and the cheese on top was golden and bubbly. Everyone raved about it. Thanks for sharing!
Great recipe! Simple to follow, and the lasagna was delicious. My only suggestion would be to clarify the amount of sauce to use in each layer.
