In a large skillet, brown the ground beef and Italian sausage over medium-high heat. Drain any excess grease.
Add the chopped onion, garlic, and bell pepper to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and sugar. Bring to a simmer and cook for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
While the sauce simmers, prepare the béchamel sauce. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to create a roux.
Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the nutmeg, salt, and pepper.
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish.
Layer lasagna noodles, meat sauce, béchamel sauce, mozzarella cheese, and Parmesan cheese. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used, ending with a layer of cheese.
Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Let the lasagna rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving.
This is a really good lasagna! The meat sauce was delicious. I made a double batch because my family loves it so much.
It was good, but I prefer a lasagna with more vegetables. Maybe some spinach or mushrooms would improve the recipe.
This lasagna is a showstopper! The flavors are perfectly balanced, and the texture is amazing. It's definitely a crowd-pleaser.
I was disappointed. The meat sauce was too greasy, and the lasagna was soggy.
I followed the recipe exactly, and it turned out great. The flavor of the red wine in the meat sauce really made a difference. I will definitely make this again!
