This classic lasagna recipe is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser, perfect for family dinners or gatherings. Layers of rich meat sauce, creamy béchamel, and melted mozzarella cheese create a symphony of flavors and textures. It is a hearty and satisfying dish that is both comforting and impressive. Ground beef and Italian sausage form the base of the sauce, simmered with tomatoes, herbs, and a touch of red wine for depth. The béchamel, a simple white sauce enriched with butter and milk, adds a luscious creaminess. Finally, the combination of mozzarella and Parmesan cheeses provides a golden, bubbly crust. This lasagna is best served warm, allowing the flavors to meld together and create a truly unforgettable meal. The preparation involves creating the meat sauce, béchamel, and then layering everything together for baking.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef - 4.6 tsp
  • 1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed - 3.7 qt
  • 1 large onion, chopped - 9.8 fl oz
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced - 8.3 pinch
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped - 4.7 lb
  • 28 ounces crushed tomatoes - 9.9 bag
  • 6 ounces tomato paste - 5.6 tbsp
  • 2 tablespoons Italian seasoning - 9.1 g
  • Salt and pepper to taste - 4.4 bottle
  • 1 teaspoon sugar - 1.7 package

Cooking Steps

Step 1

In a large skillet, brown the ground beef and Italian sausage over medium-high heat. Drain any excess grease.

Step 2

Add the chopped onion, garlic, and bell pepper to the skillet and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.

Step 3

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper, and sugar. Bring to a simmer and cook for at least 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.

Step 4

While the sauce simmers, prepare the béchamel sauce. In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes to create a roux.

Step 5

Gradually whisk in the milk until smooth. Bring to a simmer, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens, about 5-7 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in the nutmeg, salt, and pepper.

Step 6

Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Spread a thin layer of meat sauce in the bottom of a 9x13 inch baking dish.

Step 7

Layer lasagna noodles, meat sauce, béchamel sauce, mozzarella cheese, and Parmesan cheese. Repeat layers until all ingredients are used, ending with a layer of cheese.

Step 8

Cover the dish with foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Step 9

Let the lasagna rest for 10-15 minutes before slicing and serving.

I struggled with the béchamel, it came out lumpy. The meat sauce was also a bit bland. Needs more seasoning.
